Why CHAI?

CHAI is a place where new immigrants can adjust to life in Canada in a fun and relational atmosphere.  We have volunteers who are so full of the love of God that it compels them to love the newcomers of Winnipeg!  We do this by offering the four “f’s” to new immigrants:

  • Fun games

  • Free English practice

  • Friendship with Canadians

  • Fundamentals of Canadian life

What the New Immigrants had to say about CHAI

Qadan, a Somalian refugee gave this response when asked about CHAI, “I love it.  I get very few opportunities to practice my English with Canadians and I get lots of practice at the CHAI Centre.”

Nickolay a Russian immigrant from Israel comments on CHAI:  “admiration!  Respect to all the volunteers of the CHAI.  You are doing a very, very, very, important thing…Not the same as other programs.  I have a different feeling here, a good feeling.  Not just teacher and class.”

- Many said that “CHAI was like home”

-Most said that they came to make friends and practice their English

-All talked about how great our volunteers are.

- One lady told one of our volunteers, “When I need to cry, I come to CHAI”.

Learning at CHAI

This year we were blessed with a number of great speakers at the CHAI for Men and Women program including a policeman, a member of parliament, a doctor, and many people who worked with immigrants as part of their career. The following are some of what the new immigrants said they learned at the CHAI Centre:
- Saving receipts, finances
- Washing hands, healthy eating and dental care
- Lifestyle of Winnipeg people and how to integrate into Canadian society
- Protecting me and my family from violence and gangs
- Maintenance, and housing
- Rights and responsibilities of a citizen

CHAI Athletics

If you are an immigrant who wants to get in better and shape and start friendships with Canadians we would be a great fit for you.   We meet in the Calvary Temple gym at the corner of Hargrave and Notre Dame. We play basketball and we have access to a recreation room with fooseball and table tennis. Register in person at Calvary Temple or contact the CHAI Centre at 415-2550 or info@ccwpg.com
